Learning In Third Grade
Reading – We will read a variety of genres including fiction, realistic-fiction, non-fiction, fables, folktales, biographies, poetry, and more. The children will also learn about important reading strategies such as predicting, inferring, connecting, and synthesizing. We will be utilizing our Harcourt reading anthology as well as a variety of picture and chapter books.
Writing – We will be learning to write narrative stories, expository paragraphs, persuasive or opinion pieces, and poetry. This writing will focus on using correct spelling and grammar.
Math – We continue to use the math program called Envision. We will cover number sense and place value, computation and operations, patterns and relationships, data analysis, measurement, and geometry. There will be a strong focus on memorizing math facts, addition, subtraction, and multiplication.
Science – We will focus on three major topics in science: forces and magnetism, heredity of plants and animals, and weather. Students will conduct hands-on experiments while learning about these exciting topics.
Social Studies – We will travel back in time to learn about the Wampanoag people, the Pilgrims, the Puritans, colonization, and the American Revolution. The children will also learn about maps and globes, Massachusetts and our home town of Scituate.
Let the learning begin!
